Here is a link to the "spaceweather.com" eclipse photo gallery. Well worth the visit!

The following link is a great web site by one of Environment Canada's leading forecasters, Phil Chadwick. He has been portraying nature and weather on his site for some time and has completed over 600 works of art. The site is well worth seeing and if the opportunity arises, it would be worth seeing his work in person and picking up a piece or two.

The following link will take you to the front page of the JPL website which is covering the current space probe, Cassini, as it makes it's way around the planet Saturn. Many amazing photos have been returned to earth from Cassini including close-ups of Saturn's rings and moons. This link is well worth the visit.

Satellite Imagery

A good site with satellite imagery of most of North America is the OSEI website located at OSEI Current Events. This site covers all sorts of weather events including dust storms, tornadic storms, wild fires, volcanic eruptions and of course hurricanes. They even have an email notification list with the latest atmospheric events captured by satellite.

Check out the daily Earth Picture Of the Day. Each day a different photo is shown and many of them are quite spectacular. Included is a full description of the image and various links to more info are given. Well worth a look at each day. For today, March 8th, 2005, my sun dog image from the bottom of this page was displayed there and can still be seen at the EPOD'S previous days images page.

Here is a great, newly re-designed web site and search engine. Ontario Online is for web sites and services based here in Ontario. So, send them your link and get posted in this ever growing All-Ontario web service!

As of now the web site is functional once again and will receive regular updates however it my be a while before I get "everything" up to par. I have some new photos to share, a couple of weather stories and a lot of work ahead of me but I am looking forward to it, not to mention working on a whole new look for the site if I ever figure it all out.

Also, my school visits are back on and I am welcoming schools from all over to take advantage of this. We have numerous talks, displays and resources available that can enhance your grade five class curriculum as well as other grades. Give us a shout, send us an email and I will be glad to discuss a school or group visit. I also come out to home schooling groups, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts meetings as well as any other organization who would like a weather presentation of any kind.

If anyone has any information to share, comments on what we can do with the web site, changes to make or errors to correct, please send them to me so that I can work on them as soon as possible. One last note! The web cam is not working properly but I hope to have that sorted out in the next couple of days. So far I have it fixed temporarily but it may not continue to work right. Time will tell. I think it is the software or drivers as it does not compensate for the light outside very well. Any ideas from anyone on this would be welcome.

Thanks again for your ongoing support and good wishes!

Sincerely, Stephen Mayne

NOTE:
Environment Canada's
Convective Weather Statement is now gone as of September 30th and will return on May 1st. Environment Canada has published it's Top Ten Weather Stories of 2007 as well as the top events for previous years, the century and all time. This is great read for those of you who are true weather nuts like myself with lots of great information, interesting stories and a biographical piece about David Phillips, Environment Canada's Chief Climatologist.

For additional information such as current conditions or the forecast for your region as well as when bad weather approaches, you can listen to the Environment Canada Weather Radio station for this region at 162.550Mhz or you can program the frequency into a scanner as well. Also, if you intend to hold a special event at your home, cottage or place of work in Lanark County or surrounding regions, send me an email and I will put together a forecast for you for your day or weekend. Please try to give me a few days notice so that I can prepare it. I will send an initial outlook but will supply you with a final forecast 24 - 48 hours before the event.

Please feel free to contact me with suggestions or ideas for this site as it is my intent to make it the best source for weather info in eastern Ontario. Weather reports of storms, photos, offers of data or funding are always welcome as it takes a fair bit of funds and time to make this site available. I thank you in advance.
       Sincerely, Stephen Mayne.

After much annoyance and digging about, I have managed to get my web cam up and running once again. Hopefully it will stay working. I am going to be looking for a replacement camera so if anyone has suggestions, fire me off an email please.

The Creative Labs WebCam Live! has failed me again and Creative will not even give advice out of warranty so until I can replace with another brand, I will try to put new images here from time to time.

Below is the Jet Stream map created by Environment Canada. I figured that since no one was reading below a certain line on this page I might as well spice it up some.

Environment Canada Jet Stream Map

This map is updated daily by Environment Canada Logo All temperatures are in Celsius unless noted otherwise. To convert to Fahrenheit use the following formula ( °C x 9/5 + 32 = °F ).

Legend
High Pressure High Pressure Jet Stream Jet Stream
Low Pressure Low Pressure Rain Rain
Warm Front Warm Front Freezing Rain Freezing Rain
Cold Front Cold Front Snow Snow
Trowal Trowal - Trough of Warm Air Aloft Thunder Showers Thunder Showers

For those who are interested, and want to find out more information about general space news & weather, you can also check out the Science @ NASA website or see the bottom of this page for space news/weather headlines.

The "Convective Weather Statement" issued by Environment Canada is available from May 1st to September 30th, 2005. You should check this forecast each day as well to give you a "big picture" view of the weather and the storm potential for your region. Here is where you can find out if severe weather is expected where you are or elsewhere in Ontario.

Each day, twice a day, between May 1st and September 30th, I include Environment Canada's Convective Weather Forecast on the Weather Notes page. This is a discussion of the potential in the atmosphere for thunderstorm activity throughout Ontario. It does not mean we will actually get the storms but that the ingredients are all there for them to develop. It's worth a read each day!

If you are interested in helping us out with a donation of equipment or money to help us operate, please check out our sponsors link or Email me directly at donations@lanarkweather.org. Your help is always needed but right now we could use some help. Our operating costs are rising, requests to visit area schools are on the rise and we would like to maintain these services at no cost to the schools, so if you are able, please click on the PayPal link below or you can send a cheque or money order to us at the address listed on the Contact Page. Right now we are also working to collect the funding for a digital weather station to improve the overall accuracy of our reporting and forecasting. Thus far we have $500 pledged from the Lanark Soil and Crop Association towards this but our goal is $3000. You can also help us out by clicking on and checking out our sponsors. Their assistance is invaluable.

Our Weather Station Fund
needs your help. Please Donate!
You may now also donate by using PayPal, a safe and secure way to move money on the Internet. If you wish to do this, please click on the PayPal link here and you will be sent to the secure transaction server. Any funds received here will be put directly towards the purchase of digital weather station equipment unless you wish to direct it elsewhere.

Thanks for waiting and watch the following link for weather bulletins for our area... Environment Canada - Public Warnings.

The web site Staying Alive and it's companion CD-ROM is a great resource for teachers, parents, community groups and day care centres who want to introduce or emphasize fire safety to their group. For children, the CD-ROM "The Great Escape" has the most excellent curriculum and materials for bringing some fun to learning about fire safety that I have seen.

With colouring pages, word search puzzle, songs and more there are many activities for children including a great little game for the wee ones whose main character is a grandmotherly English lady aptly named Mrs. Aboutfire! Take some time to check out this site by clicking on the "Staying Alive Inc" logo and even venture out to their sponsors too.

IMAGES OF THE WEEK...
06/06/2006

Photos courtesy of Stephen Mayne of
Franktown, Ontario.

Here are a couple of lightning shots I caught on Monday, May 29th just west of Carleton Place along highway 7 at the 5th line of Ramsay Township.

The time was near midnight, the lightning rate was reaching 1000 strikes per hour in the area according to the Ontario Storm Prediction Center in Toronto. This type of lightning is not common here in eastern Ontario but is sure fun to watch.
